Grid Development

The trenching and installation of ducting to carry the high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable on the route from Claycastle Beach to the converter station in Ballyadam is complete. Over 60% of the HVDC cables have been installed. Cable installation and jointing of the cables on the N25 between Youghal and Killeagh and between Killeagh and Castlemartyr has been completed. Permanent road reinstatement on these sections has finished. At the landfall, the cofferdam was removed and the beach returned to its former state for public use.

With our partners, we are installing over 50km of underground electricity cables connecting substations across the city. Upgrades will also take place to a number of electricity substations to support Dublin’s electricity grid, with two new substations being built at Poolbeg and in central Dublin.

Powering Up Dublin (PUD) is a critical programme that will strengthen key electricity infrastructure in Dublin and the surrounding areas, making the city ‘renewable ready’. Dublin’s demand for electricity has grown and will continue to grow in the years ahead as society moves to using electricity for heat and transport. These works allow the country to meet our energy demands now and in the future. This report identifies the Best Performing Option to replace the existing Inchicore to Poolbeg 220 kV circuits 1 & 2 (CP1150 & CP1157).
